2. Transfer standard is calibrated using a primary standard; it is preferentially employed by instrument manufacturers for calibration of reference (master) instruments.

Secondary standard is calibrated in turn on the basis of a transfer standard; this type of standard is enclosed within the measuring instrument; its photometric scale is previously calibrated with such black and white standards. Secondary standards are only really designed to use for scaling of the accompanying instrument during operation.
